Raison d'etre >> The 'Pursuit of Happyness'

Happiness is being free!
The 'Pursuit of Happyness'

Christopher Gardner (Will Smith), the protagonist in the movie 'The Pursuit of Happyness', wanted to become financially successful in life so that he could provide for his son, get him good education and meet his other demands. His happiness was in financial success. Specifically, financial success by becoming a respected wall-street professional. But his true happiness was in the 'happyness' of his son. Isn't that true for most of us?

50 Shades of Happiness

We're all living complicated lives in which we want to achieve success. For most of us - life is all about becoming financially successful - being able to provide for our loved ones and being loved and respected by them and others around us. But somewhere in the journey a lot of us forget what our end goal is, and, instead get caught in the web of life and end up doing things which push us away from what success or happiness truly means for us.

But some of us take a different path. For them financial success doesn't even count as a factor contributing to happiness. They've been successful in identifying things that give them happiness and focus their energies totally on these. For some financial success is a byproduct and they achieve fame as well, while others live and die in poverty. But even in poverty their lives are spent much happier.

Now, we wouldn't advise you to give up on financial success altogether. But while you're at it, we want you to be cognizant of what happiness truly is for you.

Rating Green

Genre Psychology, Self-Development

Publisher The Random House Group (Rider Books)
The Book The book, as the name suggests, is about Flow - the concept of optimal experience postulated by the author in the course of his career in the area of human psychology. The book starts with a discussion about happiness and consciousness which lays the foundation for the ensuing discussion on Enjoyment and Flow. After which it moves onto discussing the impact and application of flow in daily lives of different people, and, how you can achieve flow (and happiness) yourself.

Comments This book is written for lay beings and the author has made sure that it is written in colloquial English. The plethora of actual cases discussed in the text keep the book engaging (and add credibility - the book is based on actual research work, not random opinions). Though there are parts where you might feel that the book could be a bit 'crisper'.

The content is relevant for all human beings. If bein…
